Lester Hough (b. 1950) started composing at the age of seven, and has continued to produce works in many different styles since. At school, he was awarded the Perrem Prize for Composition, and subsequently went on to study Composition with Anthony Hedges at The University of Hull. During his career to date, Lester has composed music for instruments and voices including three musicals, classical choral and solo instrumental works, and orchestral works including five symphonies, a prize-winning wind quintet (Ashington Festival 1973) and music and songs in popular and jazz styles.

Lester has had many performances of his music in various places. His commissioned works include The Next Big Thing (musical, Hull City Council programme for activities for young people), Time's Winged Chariot (narrator, 2 sopranos, & chamber ensemble, Humber Mouth Festival), Second Looking for N, (sextet for wind and piano, 2007 Wind & Piano Chamber Music Course, Moray); Sextet for Wind & Piano (2008 Wind & Piano Chamber Music Course, Moray).

Lester moved to Hull as an undergraduate and has remained in the East Riding of Yorkshire ever since, teaching in local schools and colleges and privately. He also writes online aural and theory training courses as Music Director with www.hofnote.com
